Good idea by Ankit

ankit garg: happy lohri...raghav
Raghav: same to u too
ankit garg: free ho kya
Raghav: haan
ankit garg: eak im baat karni hai
Raghav: bolo
ankit garg: temme..how good r our contacts with bt alumini
Raghav: what do u need from them?>
ankit garg: temme na
ankit garg: abhi sari baat clear karta hu
Raghav: haan to pehle clear kar
Raghav: but seriously
Raghav: last two batches which have passed out, i know most of them personally
ankit garg: m srys
Raghav: the batches before them, i dont know all of them, but know a few of them
Raghav: starting with the batches that passed out in 2002
Raghav: before that i have no idea
Raghav: what hppnd?
ankit garg: we( piper, nikhil, me..etc) were thinking ki biohorizon me eak spl event rakha jaye where we can call upon as many no. of bt alumini as possible so tht atleast we get to know ki aage kya kya ho sakta hai...i mean ..they r d best ppl to guide us,..
Raghav: why in biohorizon?
ankit garg: coze..this is d best platform fr such interaction
ankit garg: koi to bahana hai
ankit garg: it can turn out to be a very successfull event
ankit garg: wozzat
Raghav: sucessful in terms of iit ppl talking to their seniors. but how would this help the ppl from other colleges who r here? they r more interested in looking at industry ppl, i think
BUZZ!!!
ankit garg: yaar the thing is....atleast all d 1-5 yr batches can get a pefect exposure to " wat after bt frm iit is best" or atleast wat can lead to wat
ankit garg: n bt ppl frm other colleges can also benifit out of ti
Raghav: but thr exist no snrs associated with biotech, except a few ppl in biocon
Raghav: lets start with a simple exercise
Raghav: do u want to meet seniors who work in software?
ankit garg: yaar we ll hav d real picture when they ll tell about their own story
Raghav: what story? the dept is not that old that there exist any success stories
Raghav: were u thr last yr in the opportunities in biotech. careers session?
Raghav: or were piper/nikhil present?
ankit garg: c'mon...its not easy to answer tht
Raghav: not easy to answer what? whether or not u want to meet seniors working for software?
ankit garg: nope
ankit garg: ya ...nywhere..doin nything..but bt ppl passed frm iit
Raghav: but why do u want to meet them? what do u expect them to tell u?
Raghav: give me in a concrete manner what u expect from the session
ankit garg: n janha tak baat hai contact karne ki....we take d responsibility to manage tht....
Raghav: go on... tell me what do u expect?
ankit garg: yaar each one of them can share wid us...how they landed on wat they r after bt frm iit.....is tht good .bad..wat r d other options....things like tht
Raghav: on what basis would u select alumni?
ankit garg: in short they can guide s
ankit garg: us
ankit garg: who so ever is interested to come ...fr now
Raghav: that would not work
Raghav: why would anyone admit in a public conference that what they are doing is not a good idea?
Raghav: ppl who r interested in biotech do a phd
ankit garg: we ll create a full database of all d alumini as far as possible
Raghav: or else work for biocon if they dont want to a phd
Raghav: be practical... the event is on 10-11 march
ankit garg: we ll make it as informal as possible
Raghav: listen... if u r so serious: make it a beta event, held sometime in april
Raghav: i will help u organise it
ankit garg: we can atleast giv it a shot
ankit garg: y not bh
ankit garg: m very serious about it
ankit garg: jyada se jyada kya hoga..not many ppl turn up...but we hav nuthing to lose
ankit garg: it can b a very good start
Raghav: Here are reasons:
1) I dont think that we can have an alumni career counselling session as part of a national symposium
2) I dont think that anything useful will come out of it 3) Alumni who r doing their PhDs will not be here... and they r to me the most important ppl
4) I am not clear what u want to achieve from the event... right now, it sounds too vague to me

ankit garg: n maintaining contacts wid seniors is always helpful
Raghav: yes, it is
Raghav: dekh
Raghav: u will have a bunch of consultants, a bunch of softwares and a bunch of ppl working in biocon
Raghav: that is it!!!!
Raghav: there exist no more ppl
Raghav: the rest r doing their phds, and will be absent
Raghav: now what questions do u want to ask them
Raghav: ?
ankit garg: atleast how many ppl ll trun up...wat do u think
Raghav: none
ankit garg: if we take into account all d batches frm iitd
Raghav: unless we define the event more concretely
Raghav: so go on, what questions do u want to ask them?
ankit garg: we ll do tht..but fr now..we want to make contacts wid aumini
Raghav: and how do u want to do that?
ankit garg: atleast to ppl who r in d industry
Raghav: which industry? biocon?
ankit garg: ny sort of industry
Raghav: what will u ask them?.
ankit garg: mails...calls...invitation to bh
ankit garg: etc
ankit garg: isse aacha bahana nahi mil sakta to make contacts
Raghav: haan, u can make contacts this way, true
Raghav: and meet them informally at bh
ankit garg: c'mon...bh is our fest....bt ppls fest...n ny alumini will love to visit iit if hes invited
Raghav: but i am not so sure of having a whole evenet at bh for this sole purpose
Raghav: it is not a fest
Raghav: yes, invite them,
ankit garg: i knw
Raghav: we can invite them
Raghav: in fact, what u say makes a lot of sense...
Raghav: we need a database of the event, after which they can all be invited
ankit garg: a small informal meeting..or seminar..or something like tht can solve d purpose
ankit garg: ths wat i was telling u
Raghav: inviting them - yes... seminar - i am not sure
Raghav: informally meeting them - sure, why not (take them asides during the event and talk all u want to talk abt)
ankit garg: i knw we ll need to work a lot...but i take d responsibilty if i get ur cooperatrion
ankit garg: ya..thts it
Raghav: but i dont think it is a good idea to create a separate event for them telling abt their life stories post-iit... it doesnt go with the sense of bh
ankit garg: but kehne eak chota sa event rakh denge jisko as bahana use karenge fr invitation
ankit garg: let it nt b a big event
Raghav: it is the departmental event... they dont need an excuse to attend their dept's event!!
ankit garg: but we can take things to informal frm formal
Raghav: just invite them and then informally talk to them during the poster sessions, lunch and tea - that is a total of 4:45 hours (4 hours and 45 minutes)
ankit garg: but we still need an excuse to invite them
Raghav: their dept fest - biohorizon
ankit garg: honoring them..or something like tht
Raghav: if ur school organises its annual day and sends u an invitation, would u not turn up? is that not a sufficient excuse?
ankit garg: arre yaar unhe bhi to lagna chahayiye ki they r getting some respect frm their dep...tabhi to vo aayenge
ankit garg: tht absolutely true
Raghav: i think that if u invite them, they will turn up
ankit garg: okay...we can start wid this only
ankit garg: n if its successful...we can call them later as beta event
Raghav: yes
Raghav: we can take it forward if u guys feel that it would be a useful exercise after bh
Raghav: but now tell me, how would u go about doing it?
Raghav: acha sun... any discussions abt bh that anyone has is put up on the blog: biohorizon2006@blogspot.com
Raghav: so this discussion will also be thr
ankit garg: acha one more thing....just invite karne se kya hoga...wat spl place can we giv them in bh
Raghav: spl place?
ankit garg: on how abot goin about it?......
Raghav: wat do u mean by that?
ankit garg: i firstly need to create a database
Raghav: the database u can find in the dept office
Raghav: so what will u do next?
ankit garg: spl place means..some of them shud b given a chance to speak formally
Raghav: why?
ankit garg: we ll call them...mail them...
ankit garg: just inviting them will sound like...arre yaar just invitation hai...but if we ll ask them to share their views..they wll also feel good to share
ankit garg: n ll giv more attention to it
Raghav: but then again, it will become a formal event which is not a good idea
ankit garg: just giv it a thought again...it can turn up into a very good event
Raghav: i know my snrs, ankit
ankit garg: just a small event will do
ankit garg: but it ll b very effective
Raghav: okey
Raghav: we'll discuss it tomm
Raghav: lemme think abt it
ankit garg: okay...take ur owm time..discuss wid ppl....but m sure tht i can turnout to be very benificial in later yrs to come
ankit garg: dont forget...ppl frm us r goin to b future enterprenuers...
Raghav: sure
Raghav:
ankit garg: jo bhi karna hai..jaldi karna padega
ankit garg: n m sure ki second yr first yr valo ko mai involve kar lunga
Raghav: k
ankit garg: temme more about it tomoro
ankit garg: bbye fr nw..gotta class tmro
Raghav: k... bye

bioventures

Very interesting conversation with Ashwani

ashwani: hello
Raghav: hi
ashwani: wassup
Raghav: biohoirizon organization
Raghav: since it is now to be held on march 10-11
ashwani: okie events decided?
Raghav: review - industrial, rDNA and env. biotech
Raghav: posters - bioprocess, emerging (bionano, biophy), env. and agri
Raghav: we will have the bioventures business plan contest
Raghav: second day - bioventures, ipr and bioethics (we are trying to get a play into this) and "management of a biotech industry"
ashwani: bioinfo nahi hai?
Raghav: sorry... the emerging poster session deals primarily with bioinfo
Raghav: no review session on that
ashwani: yaar biovenutres mein thodi fight hai..
ashwani: ppl dont have many business ideas.. and tht too in biotech.. thoda specialise ho jaata hai
ashwani: basically you would have to change the foray... MBA students come into the picture
ashwani: and most do not have any idea of biotech... becoz its quite upcoming
Raghav: yeah... the business plan contest is in parallel with the management session, so we could scrap it...
Raghav: but we though we could still try
Raghav: do u advise against it?
ashwani: yaar i dont know...its for you decide.. my only worry is its a very niche thing in itself
ashwani: dekh if you consider all biotech students tht came in biohorizon last year... how many of them would have okayish business ideas which can be presented to make an event
Raghav: very few
ashwani: event quality might be at risk then
Raghav: a handful, actually
ashwani: business plans have to come from MBA students primarily... and most students come up with non-technical ideas
ashwani: and those who would come forward with technical ideas would either be not savvy'
Raghav: yes... they would come up with some it solutions for biotech problems
Raghav: *IT solutions
Raghav: not particularly good...
ashwani: so a big event cannot be organised.. maybe you can have a poster session kinda thing...
ashwani: i think we wasted much energy on this last time.. we should have realised its true potential which wasnt very high
ashwani: i think your poster session are well suited to increase participation
ashwani: last time we had a little zoomed in poster session... so the attendance in Biohorizon was high but participation in poster session was not tht high
ashwani: so this is a good step.. think further on these lines
ashwani: hello
BUZZ!!!
Raghav: sorry
Raghav: yes, that is something that has also been worrying me
ashwani: govt organisation se baat hui kuch
ashwani: catch AICTE this time
Raghav: paison ki fight nahin hai
Raghav: iocl se bahut paisa aa gaya
ashwani: yeah tht sure saved you.. but this generous money from govt organisations comes easily..dont miss that booty
Raghav: okey
Raghav: will fill the forms next week
ashwani: sahi hai.. kuch janta hai enthu waali ki you alone are doing things?
Raghav: vasie do u think we have sufficient time?
Raghav: max junta hai
ashwani: yaar speakers ki fight hai tumhe thodi.. you wont be able to get industry ppl easily...unhi ki planning karni padti hai..
ashwani: scientist to koi bhi aa jaata hai
ashwani: its quite easy.
Raghav: me, aashi, ruchi, rachna, harry, ravi, manish baser, shikhar, jazz, sandy, sumit, sahil sethi (!!!), mehra, divya, suri, rahul sir (pilot plant)... many ppl
ashwani: thts good
